How Do You Fish a Blue Marlin?
- Although Striped Marlin is the second fastest fish in the world, swimming at up to 50 miles per hour. The speed of the Blue Marlins also leaves most other fish trailing in their wake. That’s why catching a Blue Marlin is not an easy chore.
- A novice angler has to learn how to “pump and reel” or do “short-stroke.” Otherwise, the last 50 feet will take forever, with the fish pulling back every foot of line the angler takes up. The short-stroke technique is where the angler raises the rod about 15 degrees and reels like crazy for one turn of the crank as he lowers the rod tip back down those 15 degrees and rapidly repeats that process one crank after the other until the last 45 feet of line is won and the leader is reached by the wireman.
- When the leader can be reached by the wireman, he will pull the fish up beside the boat for pictures and high fives. Sometimes really wild stuff happens when the wireman grabs the leader, like an all-new airshow if the fish is still “green” or the fish making a new run and the wireman having to “dump” the leader. If the wireman dumps, the angler will have to refight the fish back up to the leader and the wireman will have to try again.
How Long Does it Take to Reel in a Blue Marlin?
Fighting the fish up those last 50 feet is a skill within itself. Once hooked, all types of Marlin display an acrobatic ability worthy of a ballerina and an acrobat – or perhaps it would be more accurate to compare them to a bullfighter. They dance, skip, and leap through the air on the end of your line, giving the angler the fight of their life. It’s little wonder that fishing for Marlins has almost legendary status amongst anglers all over the world. We can truly say that it’s not for amateurs.
